Working with COX Crone Architects, CONTEXT prepared the
Landscape Master Plan for Stage II Dubai Festival City
in the United Arab Emirates. The development
incorporates residential and commercial buildings set
within a high quality urban realm fronting Dubai Creek.
A key initiative of the scheme is the thirty-two metre
wide waterfront promenade or ‘Corniche’, linking a range
of recreational landscape and urban settings including a
boat quay, themed ’oases’, and artificial lagoons. The
particular emphasis has been placed on energizing day
and night use, with wide pavements, integrated
furniture, lighting, signage and water feature
animation.

Dubai Festival City (In Arabic: دبي فستيفال سيتي) is a large residential,
business and entertainment development in the city of Dubai, United Arab
Emirates. Touted as a "city-within-a-city", Dubai Festival City is the
Middle East's largest mixed-use development: all elements for work,
living, and leisure will be contained within the project. Once completed
Festival City will comprise a series of residential communities,
numerous hotels, malls, a golf course and other entertainment sites, and
a full suite of public services, including schools.
Description
The developer for Dubai Festival City is Al Futtaim
Group. Construction of the development, which is largely being carried
out by Al Futtaim Carillion[1], began in 2003 and is expected to take 12
years. The project spans 3.8 kilometres (2.4 miles) of water frontage on
the eastern bank of Dubai Creek and is 2 kilometers (1.24 miles) from
Dubai International Airport. As of mid-2006, investments in the project
had exceeded 11 billion AED (3 billion USD).
Hotels
The development also includes 5 hotels, three of which
are to be opened in 2007 and will be managed by InterContinental Hotels
Group. The InterContinental Dubai Festival City and the Crowne Plaza
Dubai Festival City are directly connected to the Festival Waterfront
Centre. The InterContinental Residence Suites, located in Marsa Plaza,
will provide long term stay apartments with stunning view of Dubai
Creek.
The other two hotels in the project will include the 350-room W
Dubai - Festival City (to be operated by the W brand of Starwood
Hotels), opening at the end of 2008, and the 400-room Four Seasons Hotel
Dubai Festival City, scheduled to open in 2010.
Shops, stores and restaurants
The complex includes retail malls known as the Festival
Power Centre, which opened in May 2006 and the Festival Waterfront
Centre, which opened on 1 March 2007.

Due to open in the second quarter of 2007, the InterContinental Dubai
Festival City and the Crowne Plaza Dubai Festival City are to implement
the Delphi Multi-Property Edition sales & banqueting solution from
Newmarket International for selling and delivering events and
conferences.
Tom Meyer, Area General Manager, InterContinental Hotels Group,
Dubai Festival City, commented on the decision, “The InterContinental
and Crowne Plaza hotels at Dubai Festival City represent a key component
of our global growth plan. We needed to carry our standards of quality
and service right through our events and banqueting business, so we
chose Delphi. The success that InterContinental Hotels Group properties
have had with Delphi around the world assures us that we will be
building our groups, conference, and events business in the UAE on a
strong foundation of technology and service.”
A shared resource for all of the InterContinental Hotels Group
properties at Dubai Festival City, the state-of-the-art Events Centre is
situated directly below the Crowne Plaza Dubai Festival City. It offers
dramatic views of historic Dubai Creek and encompasses 4,500 square
meters (13,500 square feet) of conference and events space across two
levels, divisible into ten break-out rooms offering services for small
board meetings or large banquets of up to 1,800 guests. There is a
24-hour business centre and hi-speed Wi-Fi internet access in all public
areas.
InterContinental Hotels Group expects to establish the Dubai
Festival City properties as a Middle East hub for groups, conferences,
and events of all types as Dubai continues its phenomenal growth as a
center for business and tourism. Delphi Multi-Property Edition enables
InterContinental Hotels Group to set and achieve clear sales targets
toward that goal, deliver superior service on large and small events
alike, and maximize return on its Dubai Festival City assets.
